Helping your hospice become research-active

Research can feel overwhelming, especially if your hospice is new to research. We provide practical advice, examples, useful resources and links to further support. Whether you are starting your first research project or building on existing work, you can use the guidance to suit your hospice.

Our vision is simple:

Led by Professor Cara Bailey, the Hospice Research Hub brings together organisations providing hospice and end of life care to share knowledge, build research skills and develop new opportunities.

Drawing on successful partnerships such as the University of Birmingham’s REACH programme, the Hub provides practical guidance and support to help hospices develop their research.

How We Can Help

Some of the ways the Hospice Research Hub can support you include:

  • Research advice and project development.
  • Funding and grant support.
  • Governance and study set-up.
  • Study delivery and evaluation.
  • Collaboration and networking.
  • Dissemination and impact.

The Hospice Research Hub can help you to:

  • Understand your current research position and identify potential research priorities.
  • Develop a research action plan and find training opportunities.
  • Connect with academic researchers and potential research studies.
  • Explore student and PhD opportunities.
  • Develop research partnerships and research ideas.
  • Identify opportunities for patient and public involvement.

Why do we exist?

Hospice teams have valuable experience and ideas that can help improve care. Research helps us explore these ideas and build evidence for better palliative and end-of-life care.

Yet many teams tell us they need support with:

  • Understanding how to get involved in research.
  • Finding research opportunities and partnerships.
  • Navigating research governance and approvals.
  • Accessing funding opportunities.

One Research Team, Many Hospices

At the heart of the Hub is a collaborative approach.

Instead of supporting a single organisation in isolation, our research team works across multiple hospices, providing expertise, mentorship, and practical support wherever it is needed.

This model allows hospices to:

  • Access specialist research knowledge.
  • Learn from the experiences of other organisations.
  • Share resources and best practice.
  • Participate in larger collaborative projects.
  • Build sustainable research capacity within their own teams.

By working collectively, hospices can achieve more than any one organisation could alone.

Our Story

The Hospice Research Hub was created because hospice research can be challenging. Hospice teams have valuable ideas and experience that can help improve care but may not have the research support or infrastructure to develop them. The Hub brings hospices together to provide that support and help turn ideas into research that can improve care for patients, families and carers.

Our Team

We work alongside hospices to develop research ideas, support projects and help turn findings into recommendations. Our team brings together experience in hospice and palliative care and research.
